Master station communicate with the RTUs to acquire and convert data to engineering units to maintain the data base and perform all interaction with operation via the workstation MMI. The master station also perform alarm reporting, historical archival of data, and is responsible application programs in the energy management system (EMS).
Master Station (MTU, or Master) is designed around a SCADA host computer (or a redundant pair of computers, in the case of optional, dual-redundant configurations), running the VMS operating system on a DEC Alpha processor.
The computer is equipped with memory, disk, and other resources depending on application and performance requirements. In dual-redundant configurations, the "standby" computer keeps a complete updated copy of the database (it is a "hot standby"), and can take over control any time the master computer is unable to do so.
A number of additional computers may be connected to the host(s), to provide additional operating positions. These may be Alpha machines, or Intel machines running Windows NT.
